Dr. Sloan was born and raised in Southwest Ohio. He attended Oberlin College where he majored in chemistry and mathematics, graduating magna cum laude. Dr. Sloan went on to medical school at the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine, then continued at University of Chicago for his internship and residency in psychiatry. After completing his medical and psychiatric training in 1990, Dr. Sloan moved to Philadelphia, where he directed the Psychiatric Acute Care Inpatient Unit at the Albert Einstein Medical Center.
In 1992 Dr. Sloan was hired by the Seattle VA Medical Center to design, implement and oversee a new program to treat dually diagnosed veterans -- that is, veterans with both severe psychiatric illness and substance abuse issues. This treatment program became a model of integrated treatment and Dr. Sloan was invited to present their experience at a number of other regional medical centers. While on staff at the VA, Dr. Sloan was also faculty in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at the University of Washington. He is published in a number of areas including general psychiatry, addiction psychiatry, health services and health economics.
In 2009, after working at the VA for seventeen years, Dr. Sloan decided to move on to new challenges. He felt that in private practice, he would be able to have a more personal relationship with his patients. He feels that one of his duties as a psychiatrist is to educate his patients about any illness with which they may be challenged. He also believes that any relationship he has with a patient is a partnership, patients want to be in control of their own destinies and his job is to guide and support them on their journey.
Dr. Sloan currently lives on Mercer Island along with his wife, dog and 3 cats.
